Known affectionately as "Chief" to generations of campers and staff at Kilcoo Camp, John passed away April 22, 2003 in Toronto.
St. James Cathedral over-flowed with friends and colleagues who gathered to fondly remember and celebrate every facet of John's extraordinary life.
In 1956 John and Peggy bought Kilcoo from Charlie Plewman who founded the camp in 1931.
John was a camper and on staff under the Plewmans, who were close camping friends of our "Chief" Taylor Statten and Tonakela.
John and Peggy joined an energetic and dedicated group of camp directors in the Ontario, Canadian and American Camping Associations and were two of the founders of the Society of Camp Directors.
The Latimers were "young" friends and colleagues of our Dr. Harry and Couchie Ebbs (Wapomeo and TSC directors until 1975).
In 1966 the Kilcoo community established the AMICI Camping Charity which sends children to many other camps every summer.
John's and Peggy's son David has been the director of Kilcoo for 18 years, carrying on with the high standards set by his father.
John has also been the Headmaster of Royal St. Georges College, and recently co-founded Greenwood College School on Mount Pleasant Road in Toronto.
John was a huge presence in the camping community.
His powerful leadership, incredible energy, dedication and innovations, along with his sincere interest in everyone he met and his wonderful sense of fun, will keep his memory alive in the hearts and minds of everyone who had the honour of knowing him.
Fires of Friendship sends our sincerest condolences to Peggy, David, Jeffery,
Michael, their partners and the entire Kilcoo Camp community.
