In the 1940s, Art Labatt, John Frankel, Gordy Derzon and I met at Ahmek. We have stayed in touch over all the ensuing years. |
||||
In November 2009, Art & Sonia Labatt had the six of us down to their home in Tucson for a competitive, happy and memorable TSC reunion. On our last day, they had arranged for all of us to take a jeep tour of the desert foothills around the Rincon Mountains. But the Labatts also arranged that way out in the desert hills we bumped into an Ahmek tripping Campsite, complete with Teepee, council ring fire, water boiling sites, and a canoe. Here are five pictures of this adventure, plus a sixth: that of our Wap Guide.

writes from The Woodlands, Texas: I found this photo recently and took it to the local camera store where they scanned it as a jpg file. They did not touch it up or adjust the colors. The photo is a group shot of the Ahmek CITs of 1964. You may already have a copy of it from Chuck Bethea or one of the other CITs of that summer. I'm in the group, third row up in the center. Merry Christmas PS: We now have a place where you can help identify the people in this photo. Please visit Mike Fitzgibbons' Connnections page. |
Laura and Caroline decided a month ago that the Felstiners should not be in the city for Thanksgiving; they rented a wonderful cottage on Pen Lake. On Sunday the 11th we all went in to Camp. The night before, Heather Cameron and husband Matt came from their cottage for a good evening. Eight people - four dogs. Here are some images of Camp on October 11.

writes from Québec City "Bonjour ! "Seeing Sheila MacFeeters' pictures of the 14 day trip in 1970 made me remember that most of them went on the Quetico trip the next year in 1971. Here is a picture of my Quetico team in 1971. I still have wonderful memories of my summers at Wapomeo from 1968 to 1971." |
writes "While camping on Smoothwater Lake in August 1970 our 14 day trip met up with a couple of anglers named Frank and LloydI've always remembered their names because we mentioned them in our trip song. They were kind enough to tow a few of us up the lake to meet Tike and Tony Usher who were bringing in the food pick-up. What I had forgotten was that they took pictures of usincluding a Polaroid picture which we wrote our names on. "Twenty eight years later I was working at an MNR openhouse in North Bay when a man from Sturgeon Falls asked if I'd ever been on a canoe trip to Smoothwater LakeI choked, asked if he was Frank or Lloyd, and asked how he could possibly remember me so many years later. He said he had always kept that Polaroid because he was so impressed with us and he was sure some of us would be famous someday! He'd recently come across the picture in a drawer, and recognized my name as the local MNR District Manager.
"I left North Bay 8 years ago, and had forgotten that Lloyd mentioned he had other pictures which he would give to me, and 3 years ago I left MNR. Last month I was tracked down by a current MNR employee who had met Lloyd at last spring's Trappers' Conventionhe'd given her the pictures and asked her to send them to me. Sohere are the ones that best show our tripI have more to share with friends, but Louise would kill me if they were published! "Cheers - |
"I was a camper, counsellor, CIT director, Outpost (co-director) ranging from the mid 1970s until the mid 80s. These are some of my collection of slides that I am slowly getting scanned." |

"A number of my family were at September Camp from the first of September through Labour Day. As usual I did some photography, and this time I have put them on a web site that Mac provides me... "Also, here is a time exposure of Northern Lights on the Thursday night at about ten p.m. ..." |

"Together with some from the 2000 Reunion, here are some old photos I found. O my Godmy grandchildren are the same age! And my 'cabinmates' should be mature enough to laugh along with me! Apologies for mistaken names or years. I don't know where most of these campers have goneperhaps this will rekindle some interest." |

The 14-Day Trip was BIG when I was 16 in 1964. We went "here and there" to Kiosk and Pembroke and when we came "home" after 14 days, I went out again on a 3-day trip, as "camper-in-training for counsellor-in-training", with some very young campers. It was a very fun and grubby summerand I had the time of my life!! (And now my grandchildren are almost that age...) |

writes: "On December 30, 2004, Laura Felstiner led a small fit, trained, 100% dedicated group into camp from our advance base camp at Cedar Grove Lodge on the upper col. |
| "The snow was so deep we did not get any further than the bell tower; the younger people wanted to cross the Bay Bridge but the snow was too deep. It had drifted higher than I had ever seen it, and I (we) have been in about fifteen times in late December over the years. The next day it began raining, so I doubt that it looked this way for long." |

| Jim Smellie writes "This photo was taken in the fall of 2001 by my son Alan, who has just wrapped up his long career as an Ahmek camper and staff. It is a view that perhaps not many have seen, and I thought it might fit well." | ![]() |

Some of you may remember this old ship from years long gone. Many an evening did we watch the ship, and the sun set over her masts. |
| "The Chief" and "Tonakela", the two people responsible for creating one of the best summer camps in the world. Hmm, nice to know things haven't changed. |
